Abstract:The aim of this paper is to examine the effects of sectoral characteristics, in-house R&D activities, innovation strategies and nature of knowledge on firms’ engagement in varied knowledge interactions. Based on a survey of all above-scale manufacturing firms at Qingxi Town of Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, we gathered data on 14 university-industry-research institution knowledge interaction channels used by a sample of 166 manufacturing firms. We distinguish four types of knowledge interaction channels, namely collaborative R&D, human mobility, R&D services and support and commercialization of research results . The findings show that firms in high-tech industries engage more deeply in human mobility, R&D support and services and commercialization of research results channels than those in non-high-tech industries, but there is no difference between the two sectors in collaborative R&D channels. Besides, the results show that there are positive correlations between the four channels and in-house R&D and explorative innovation strategy. At last, we find that nature of knowledge acquired from external sources can influence the propensity of firms to engage diversified channels.
