城市形态转换的主要表征是其核心功能——集散效应的演变。当代中心或高端城市的核心功能正由商品集散、工业集散、资本集散等转向“知识集散”。这便催生出“知识城市”形态。知识集散是一个知识集聚、创新与扩散的循环累积过程。这可通过AID模型加以刻画并运用样本城市数据予以实证。

The main representation of urban morphological transformation is the evolution of the agglomerating-diffusing effect as its core function. The agglomerating-diffusing object (subject matter) of the contemporary central or high-end cities are being changed from commodity, industry and capital into knowledge. This accordingly produces “the knowledge agglomerating-diffusing” and gives birth to the "knowledge city" mode. Knowledge agglomerating-diffusing is a circling and cumulating process of knowledge agglomeration, innovation and diffusion. This can be described by the AID model and empirically evidenced through using data from sample cities.
