民国时期大学的现代科学研究机构——理工农医科研究院所,虽然是肇始于传统国学研究非常强势和现代科学技术研究十分薄弱的环境之中,但其建立和发展势头十分强劲,其发展的速度也很快。民国时期大学研究院所的职能首先是科学研究,而在科学研究中,把科学研究与生产实践相结合、与社会需求相结合、为社会直接提供科技服务是其重要特色。民国时期大学研究院所的另一个重要职能是研究生培养,让研究生在上学期间直接进入科学研究过程,既在从事研究的实践中培养研究素养和能力,又受到大学良好教育范式的塑造,从而使研究生成为素质健全而业务能力突出的研究人才。
