Abstract:The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is one of the most important channels to support the basic research in China. It has been recognized as one of the most regulated and most fair funds by researchers. The competitive capacity on NSFC has been a very important measure of the basic research level of regions. This paper proposes a new index, the NSFC based Competitiveness Index (NCI), which is used to analyze the geographic distribution of medical science basic research in Mainland China, and the competitiveness of 31 provincial areas, combined with some other relevant statistical indicators. The results show that: the geographic distribution of China"s medical science basic science research power is very uneven, and the competition among different provinces is quite fierce. In general, the development of China"s medical science basic research is moving towards a positive direction.
