Abstract:US government began to support science and technology(S T) activities on a large scale since the end of World War II(WWII). To better manage S T activities, different granting agencies were established according to the requirements of the national strategies in different periods. The S T and innovation granting agencies established by US government were analyzed in four different periods, the end of WWII to the beginning of the Cold War, the period during the Cold War, the New Economy transformation during 1980s and 1990s, and the years after the 21 century. The characteristics of those granting agencies were analyzed and inspirations with respected to the implementation of the Innovation Driven Development Strategy based on the experiences of the US government were discussed.
