Abstract:Technology heterogeneity of supplier network provides possibilities for knowledge acquisition of the focal firm. This study explores the following two questions in the supplier network context: (1) what is the relationship between technology heterogeneity and knowledge acquisition? (2) what factors will affect the relationship between technology heterogeneity and knowledge acquisition? According to social network and absorptive ability theories, we demonstrate the impact of technology heterogeneity on knowledge acquisition, and future construct a conceptual model by adding network features, including network density, and relationship intensity, and absorptive ability as moderating variables. After OLS regressions on a survey data set of 202 Chinese manufacturing firms, the research draws two findings. First, technology heterogeneity facilitates knowledge acquisition. Second, relationship intensity and absorptive ability positively moderate the relationship between technology heterogeneity and knowledge acquisition, while network density does not have a significant moderating effect.
