Abstract:Technological innovation has become the key driving force of the China"s Strategic Emerging Industries (SEIs). However, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are the main composition of the whole industries in this stage result in relatively weak R D and technological innovation capabilities. The gap between the huge demand of technological innovation and the insufficient R D capability among SEIs makes technological innovation modes become an urgent need. Based on the analysis of characteristics and interactions of both SEIs’ technological innovation at current stage and generic technology, we propose that the development of generic technology is the essential part of SEIs. According to supply and demand analysis of generic technology in SEIs, as well as a series of field research with our research group, we identify four types of SEIs technological innovation modes, namely "Scientific-Institution-Leading Mode", "Customization Mode", "Spillover Mode", and "Alliance Mode". For each mode, we demonstrate their application prerequisites, investment subjects, main theories, advantages and disadvantages, and potential risks when they are applied.
