Abstract:Researches on transactive memory system and shared mental model have almost developed in parallel since the two constructs were proposed. It is of great significance to explore the complex relationship between transactive memory system and shared mental model, while few empirical studies have been conducted so far. In the paper, we conducted a questionnaire survey with 34 research teams which were conveniently sampled form three universities in China. The results showed that transactive memory system, team mental model and task mental model presented a positively impact on team performance respectively. More than that, transactive memory system and task mental model mediated the relationship between team mental model and team performance, and the difference between the two sepcific mediating effects was non-significant at 0.05 level. Furethermore, the correlation between transactive memory system and task mental model became non-significant after the effect of the team's mental model was controlled. Therefore, there are two equally important but different mechanisms—transactive memory system and task mental model—for team mental model to influence team performance. Finally, we discussed the implications for our findings and directions for future research.
