Abstract:Employing the Global Malmquist-Luenberger (GML) index, the paper investigates the total factor productivity (TFP) change of transportation carbon emission in 30 Chinese provincial-level administrative regions from 2009 to 2016. Regional difference and its causes have been analyzed through the Theil index and the Coefficient of Variation. Based on the decomposition of the GML index, factors influenced the TFP change of transportation carbon emission have also been studied. The study has shown that the TFP of transportation carbon emission in the central and the western region had decreased during the observed period, which had resulted in the decline of the TFP in China. Regional difference of the TFP was mainly contributed by intra-regional difference of the four main economic regions, especially the western and the north-eastern region. Although different factors had influenced the TFP change in different regions, the TFP growth of the four regions had all been restricted by technical development.
