Abstract:Urban innovation capability is affected by many factors. With the development of "War for Talent" among Chinese cities, the relationship between population mobility and urban innovation capability has attracted attention of all parties. This paper uses 2006-2018 Chinese Vice-provincial cities and municipalities as samples to study the impact and mechanism of population mobility on urban innovation capability. The empirical results show that the increase in population mobility has significantly promoted the improvement of urban innovation capability. After a series of robustness tests, the above conclusion still holds. From the perspective of the mechanism of action, population mobility can affect urban innovation capability through improving the level of urban human capital and promoting the upgrading of industrial structure. Judging from the heterogeneous results, the promotion effect of population mobility on urban innovation capability is more prominent in cities with higher population size. This paper enriches the relevant literature on the relationship between population mobility and innovation capability, which has a certain reference value for the city to formulate population mobility policy and enhance urban innovation capability.
