Abstract:Transparency and traceability (T&T) are crucial to effective product eco-design. The commitment-trust theory provides an important approach to understand eco-design transparency practices and perspectives. Blockchain technology and platform can support T&T through promoting trust and commitment among various stakeholders who can contribute to eco-design. To enable a fully traceable eco-design, an integrated architecture is proposed which includes blockchain characteristics and its ecosystem. Blockchain boosts eco-design T&T along five aspects: material verification, compliance audits, life cycle analysis (LCA), carbon emissions tracking, and recycling. In a selected Nike case study with secondary sources, the blockchain integrated architecture to promote trust and commitment is elaborated. Stakeholders and consumers may leverage blockchain technology to verify eco-design proclamations. Through establishing independent accountability process, this paper provides valuable insights for companies that are committed to making more transparent choices in eco-design
