Abstract:Implementing international strategy in EMNEs is of great significance to enhance firm’s innovation, but there is still controversy in the academic circles on whether internationalization can promote innovation.The study constructs the theoretical logic of "degree of internationalization -- knowledge search -- innovation performance", then dividing knowledge search into local search and boundary-spanning search by technology boundary and using them as mediating factors, we explore the impact of internationalization on innovation performance of firms in emerging economies, and further explores the moderating role of home country market competition in the relationship between the degree of internationalization and knowledge search. Based on the data of China's A-share manufacturing listed companies spanning 19 years, the empirical test results show that: (1) the degree of internationalization has an inverted U-shaped effect on innovation performance. (2) The degree of internationalization has a significant positive effect on both local search and boundary-spanning search. Local search also has a positive effect on innovation performance, but boundary-spanning search has an inverted U-shaped effect on innovation performance. (3) Knowledge search plays an effective mediating role between internationalization degree and innovation performance. (4) The degree of competition in the home market plays a positive moderating role between the degree of internationalization and knowledge search. In summary, the positive linear relationship between local search and innovation performance, as well as the inverted U-shaped relationship between boundary-spanning search and innovation performance, can explain the source of the positive linear relationship or inverted U-shaped relationship between internationalization degree and innovation performance to a certain extent, due to the mediating effect of knowledge search between the degree of internationalization and innovation performance. At the same time, the degree of competition in the home market can promote the local search and boundary-spanning search of enterprises by improving the degree of internationalization, and promote the improvement of enterprise innovation performance.
